What these books are

Five books that work by image and rhythm rather than argument: Job’s protest against undeserved suffering, the Psalms’ full range of prayer, Proverbs’ distilled practical wisdom, Ecclesiastes’ hard look at meaning, and the Song’s unembarrassed love poetry.

How to read them

Hebrew poetry does not rhyme; it repeats and intensifies. A line says something, and the next line says it again from a slightly different angle. Once you notice that pattern you can read these books much more slowly and get much more from them.

They also disagree with each other on purpose. Proverbs says the wise prosper; Job and Ecclesiastes point out that they often do not. The canon holds both, which is itself part of the instruction.
